What to Wear to a Studio Fam Portrait That Feels Elegant & Effortless

By Megan M. Johnson | FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY | HEIRLOOM PORTRAITS

Planning your family’s wardrobe for a professional portrait session can feel like a big task—but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. As a Northwest Arkansas family photographer passionate about creating timeless, heirloom-quality portraits, I’ve learned that wardrobe choices can make a significant difference in the overall feel of your photos. When thoughtfully chosen, your clothing not only complements your family’s natural connection, but it elevates your portrait into a piece of legacy art.

Here are a few wardrobe tips I recommend to all families preparing for their portrait session in Rogers, Bentonville, Fayetteville, or anywhere in the NWA region:

1. Stick to a Coordinated Color Palette

Rather than dressing everyone in identical outfits, opt for complementary tones that work well together. Neutral shades like ivory, beige, soft blue, sage, and muted blush create a cohesive look and photograph beautifully in natural light. These tones also help your final portraits feel elegant and timeless—perfect for displaying in your home for years to come.

2. Dress Up—Just a Bit

Your family portraits are meant to celebrate the season of life you're in, whether it’s marking a milestone or simply honoring togetherness. Choose pieces that feel elevated yet comfortable. Think flowing dresses, tailored slacks, and classic button-downs. If you’d wear it to a nice dinner or a cocktail gathering, it’s likely a great fit for your session.

3. Keep It Clean and Classic

Avoid clothing with logos, text, or busy patterns. Instead, choose textured fabrics like linen, knits, or subtle lace—these photograph beautifully and don’t compete with your family’s expressions and connection.

4. We’re Here to Help

Not sure where to start? As part of your heirloom photography experience, I offer personal wardrobe consultations and can help source pieces—especially gowns—that reflect the timeless, Ralph Lauren-inspired style my work is known for.
